YONECO has established a home for street-connected children in Zomba district as one way of enhancing child care and protection.
The Executive Director for YONECO, MacBain Mkandawire explained that the development comes following a directive by the office of the Ombudsman to the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare (MoGDSW) to find means of providing shelter to street-connected children in the country.
“What we have discovered is that children who are connected and living in the streets are in danger of being harmed. These youngsters sleep under bridges as well as in video-show rooms and they at risk of being trafficked, sodomized among other things.”
“And we are therefore complimenting the Ministry’s efforts of ensuring that children living and connected to the street are well protected and supported,”Mkandawire said.
YONECOg has been working with children who are connected and living in the streets for more than 15 years.
